Our very first Poker Tournament Benefiting Boysville was a huge success!
There was a lot of hard work putting this event together and it was well worth it. Everyone had a great time and there were great prizes donated by many wonderful and generous companies. Project Control was the title sponsor and Alterman provided the venue and extra people to help throughout the event. We even had a special belt made for the first place winner along with cash prizes and cash prizes for 2nd and 3rd place winners. You can bet that this will become an annual event so we can give back to the community and provide a great time for everyone who attends. If you missed out this year, be sure to enter next year!

The happy hour at the Evil Olive was a blast. For all of you who did not attend and represent your class just lost the right to yell "Best Class Ever!" Last year's class of 2017 showed strong and is determined to keep the tradition alive. Let's see if this years class can give them a run for their money.

    Greetings Alumni!
Can you believe we’re already over half way through the 2018 Leadership Lab year! We only have 3 classes left and the next one is Community day with city council on Sept. 12th. This year we’re excited to have Mayor Ron Nirenberg delivering opening remarks prior to the city council session, and later in the day we’re scheduled to have John Wright from RSM, City Manager Sheryl Scully, and CPS CEO Mrs. Paula Gold-Williams. A busy day for sure!
For “Leader as Brand Strategist” session in October, the Alumni Board will make its first pitch to the class about joining the Alumni. We’ll also be holding elections for new board members as some of our more “seasoned” members are due to roll off. If you work with any of the current students, please advise them on the benefits and opportunities they can experience as Alumni members.
    Thank you,
    John Wood

On May 17th, the Leadership Lab Alumni Board hosted a “Civilian Response to Active Shooter” education session.  Officer Edwin (Trey) Turner led the session for us.  Almost 40 attendees learned about coping with an active shooter situation, how to respond when an active shooter is near, what information to provide 911 or law enforcement and what to do when law enforcement arrives.

Here are some of the safety tips that Officer Turner provided.

    • Always be aware of your surroundings
    • In the event of an emergency, most people will try to exit the same door they entered creating a backlog of people.  Know where the alternative exits are and use them.
    • It is always better to exit a building rather than trying to hide somewhere.
    • If a law enforcement officer approaches you, have your hands empty
and raise them in the air so that the officer quickly recognizes that you are unarmed.

We want to give special thanks to Dauley Enterprises Mission Open Air Market for sponsoring this event.

    More events to watch for:
Another education session is being planned for the fall. In June, our “Bring a Friend” happy hour is planned.  You will receive more details on these events.  If you change jobs, please update your profile with us so that we can keep you informed on future activities.

    Greetings Fellow Alumni!

I am pleased and humbled to serve as this year’s Leadership Lab Chair!

This has certainly been the year for change and although it poses challenges it also has presented many opportunities to work with some new folks and new class content.

Our class size is officially 80 and we have many of the same businesses represented as prior years but we also have corporate participants that are new to the city such as Hulu, as well as new small businesses like the Frame Gallery. It says a lot about the program when newcomers to the city join the North Chamber and participate in Leadership Lab.

This year we held retreat at the T-Bar M Ranch in New Braunfels. Having attended retreat as a LLab student and as a Team Lead/Co-chair since 2012, it was quite a change from the Flying L. Although amenities we more abundant at T-Bar M, we did miss the remoteness and rural setting of the Flying L.

I’d like to especially thank my awesome retreat team staring with my Co-Chair and LLab mentor, Melodye Tomsu, Team Leads Lisa Pinto, Jennifer Van Cleave, Maria Dunn, Chris Scherer, Linda Bachman, Jamie Suriano, and Lisa Kopecky. And I can’t forget the contributions of Letha Harrelson, and Michael Wyant (paparazzi).

Another big change this year is the progression from DISC to the Birkman assessment. The Birkman assessment is a much deeper delve into the leadership behaviors one exhibits vs. the leadership styles. This year Michelle Howison from Endeavor Management facilitated the inaugural session, receiving praise from the students as reflected in their post-session surveys.

Each student receives a 120 page Birkman report that we’ll be unpacking throughout the year along with the continued personal/professional development journey facilitated by Kevin Prescott.

I appreciate the support of the alumni received with the many volunteers,  etc. I’ll be looking forward to conveying additional opportunities to assist and interact with this year’s class!
